Susan Boone Durkee Oil Portrait Sketches at The Lobster Pot Studio

Paul Newman, oil on canvas 16 x 20  Private Collection

The art of the Portrait, a timeless expression of love and honor.

On occasion clients want to commission a portrait but desire something more informal then a large, fully rendered and detailed portrait, an oil portrait sketch is a perfect solution.

An oil  portrait sketch is a head and shoulder painting 16 x 20 or 14 x 18  where the spirit and likeness of the head is finely captured on canvas but the clothes and back ground are loosely suggested. It is a fun, light and a less expensive alternative to formal portraiture.

If the subject chooses to pose for a short sitting (2-3 hours), it is a added bonus, as the subject can see the early development of the portrait sketch all the while observing and learning about the development stages. Photos of the subject and pose are taken to serve are references for the completion of the oil sketch.

Here are some samples of portrait sketches:

Governor of Connecticut Dannel Malloy   20 x 16 oil on linen

       Tina Nocom, 16 x 20

Erika DeSantis

Lucille Lortel, 16 x 20, collection The Players Club, NY
Peter Trippi, 16 x 20, collection Peter Trippi
President Ronald Reagan, collection of the artist
